WELCOME TO SIXTH GRADE

September 15, 2015

Dear Sixth Grade Parents;

Welcome to sixth grade. The first eight days of school have gone well; we have enjoyed meeting your children.  We look forward to meeting you during Parent Night on Thursday, September 24.

1) Every 3- 4 weeks, we will send a sixth grade update with information about the curriculum and other 6th grade happenings.  First and foremost, the sixth grade teachers and assistants are:

Mr. Gale = mathMs. Gray = language arts

Mrs. Rooney = social studiesMrs. Stack = science

Mrs. Comeau = team teacherMrs. Jaffer = team assistant

Mrs. DeCoste = team assistant

2) Thank you in advance for your patience with the introduction of iPads to the sixth grade. As it is our first year using iPads, we will be rolling out the technology tools slowly. The students have been introduced to Schoology & Notability. At this point in time, we anticipate using Schoology to post assignments and resources. The calendar lists upcoming work. Homework assignments will be labeled with a HW. We do not plan to use the gradebook feature until all students and teachers are comfortable with this learning management system. Notability will be used to annotate texts, including notes. ELA writing assignments will be completed on Google Docs and shared with Ms. Gray.

3) Outdoor Education will take place from October 14-16 at the Sargent Center in Hancock, NH. An important parent meeting with the director of Nature’s Classroom will be held on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:00pm in the auditorium. In the meantime, please obtain a copy of your child’s current physical. This trip is an extension of our curriculum and an integral part of the sixth grade experience. The sixth grade teachers accompany the students on this trip. Students will stay in supervised dorms, and a nurse will be available 24/7.

4) Communication

In addition to these updates, parents are encouraged to regularly check the classroom web pages which can be accessed through the Carlisle School Home page @ http://www.carlisle.k12.ma.us/school/classpages.html

These sites provide specific information on curriculum, daily homework assignments, and student resources.  Other forms of communication include: emails, interim reports distributed each mid-term, report cards, and December/March parent-teacher conferences. If you should have a need to contact the team, typically, your child’s homeroom teacher serves as the “point” person.  If you anticipate your child missing school, advance notice is appreciated.

5) Homework Club:

Thank you to all the parents who have returned the homework club contracts.  As a reminder this afternoon “club” is a time for students to work on homework, get assistance from teachers, and make-up/re-do assignments.  We ask that students use this time wisely and take advantage of this after school period to get extra help from us.

6) Spaghetti Supper – October 20

Thanks to the many parents who year after year make this an annual successful Carlisle tradition.  Students will be meeting with parents next week to receive ticket information.

As always if you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact us.  We anticipate having a great year!
